Lakeland Motor Museum to hold September ‘Drive & Ride In Day’

Owners of all makes and models of classic and performance cars, motorbikes and light commercials are being invited to the Lakeland Motor Museum’s latest ‘Drive & Ride In Day’ on 15 September – with a special invitation also being extended to owners of Citroens and Minis.

As one of the north’s leading heritage attractions, the museum at Backbarrow in South Cumbria is expecting around 150 vehicles in its extensive car park, where drivers will be able to show-off their pride and joy and compare notes with visitors and other vehicle owners.

2019 is the 100th anniversary of Citroen and the 60th anniversary of Mini, with event organisers looking forward to seeing examples of both brands proudly on display throughout the day.

As with previous similar events at the museum, a special trophy will also be awarded to the owner of the vehicle judged by operations manager Chris Lowe to be the most interesting or unique.

Chris says, “I’ve been tinkering away in the shed to come up with another one-of-a-kind trophy for the winner of the competition. We decided to ditch the old-fashioned trophies in favour of hand-made ones, which I’ve created personally by using interesting motoring artefacts from our extensive collection of spare parts!”

Chris continues, “The winner of this month’s event will be awarded my latest hand-crafted trophy, made from a 1960s steering wheel produced by racing driver and motorsport pundit Les Leston’s company, supported by a BSA spanner which has been bent to create the stand, on a plinth created from an original ‘Wright’ registration plate.

“The first trophy was a Hohm cutaway engine and the second was a 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air hood ornament. The winner of each trophy is entitled to keep hold of it for a year, before returning it for the next winner. We run three ‘Drive & Ride In Day’ events every year, so there are plenty of chances to win!”

Owners of classic cars from right across the country are welcome and there’s no need to book a slot, just turn up.

Indoors, the museum’s extensive collection of cars, motorbikes and artefacts will also be on display as usual, with occupants of the classic vehicles participating in the ‘Drive & Ride In Day’ event offered a discount on entry to the museum itself.

The museum is the home of a unique collection of 30,000 exhibits, including more than 150 classic cars and motorbikes, including four Citroens and two Minis.
